Well, I just came back from a show where my 2X10 Lightning was featured by the lead guitarist. The band was awesome! The tunes from Country to Rock to Bluegrass!

The band members had never heard the amp, and they all commented how great it sounded. One time, the two guitarist were playing a Tele & Broadcaster. The Broadcaster was through the lightning. the tele through a Deluxe reverb. Completely different sound. Lightining was crisp and clear; Deluxe was flat and dull.

Anyhow, the player on the Lighting commmented that he really liked it but there were times he wanted it "Cleaner". I already am using a DC-30 OT, and will also change the impedence to reflect 8K instead of the 4K 'mismatch.

Any other ideas to clean it up a wee bit??

How about eliminating the parallel triodes in the first stage?

In other words just running one triode like a Spitfire.

It might be worth a try, if your friend likes squeaky clean country tone.

Thanks, It might be worth a try if the impedance changes, and maybe a cathode bias decrease dont help.

A parallel triode offers about 20% more gain than a single triode, so you can ditch that and just use half of V1 for starters. You can also change the cathode resistor for the first stage and the cathode follower. Increasing those resistors has almost no impact on frequency response when you are using a 22uF bypass capacitor, so try something crazy like 4.7K on one or both of the cathodes.

Of course, changing the rectifier to a 5U4 will also help clean things up a bit.

I've never actually heard of someone wanting a cleaner Lightning. To each his own, I guess.

LOL. It sounded great to me and he really liked it too. There were just some times when he wanted it to be louder / cleaner so I'll see what I can do to accommodate him.

I'll try the various suggestions. Starting with the impedance match. I like the idea of the cathode follower. Top Hat does that on their Club Deluxe [and maybe others].

Bits & Volts & I are looking for some more clean tweak ideas for the Lightning. Does anyone have any additional thoughts or experiences to share with us??

Here's a stupid question....what about dropping the plate resistor on V1 a hair?

or will that much with the effectiveness of the tone stack?

Maybe check out a Spitfire design. Some say the Spitfire has more clean headroom than a Lightning.

Stephen;

It does and a 2K2 Cathode Resistor on V1 adds more.

You could try a 5751 in V1.

Does it affect the souind in any other way? Less volume perhaps? Alternate tone or just transparently cleaner?

The 5751 seems like a great non-invasive mod...

If you've got one try it out & let me know how it sounds. I'm interested as well. I was looking for such an easy fix.

And dropping that plate resistor to 100K will help too.

Just a bit cleaner. Doesn't loose that Chime at all.

That might break the rules of the game, somewhat...

Also, what about the odds of just making the distortion louder without adding headroom? A common "complaint" about the 5E3X2 design by Ted BBQ & friends.
