Is it possible to mount the VRM next to one of the tubes hidden by the back panel so that I do not have to have it take the place of my power or standby switch and can still set it and forget it unless I really need it?

Shouldn't be a problem, just make sure the Mosfet has a good heat sink connection,and keep your wiring good,clean and short.

Thanks for the info I am thinking I am not going to use the VRM though as I want the original circuit as close to spec as possible.

With VRM on max, it is the original circuit (less 3 volts on B+ only)
You can wire as suggested. Important to locate it where wire runs are short though.

Say I was to leave the standby in, and but the VRM in at the Power Switch on a push pull pot. How would one go about hooking this up?
