Not too tough. Take a look at Mark Huss' Plexi 6V6 schematic and you can probably figure it out from there. Also look at a 5E3 Deluxe. Actually, look at Hoffman's revised Deluxe. That is exactly it. You will need something like a 250R cathode resistor and maybe some 470R screen resistors. You might also look at the tail resistor in the PI. There isn't much else to it. Just be aware it won't have as much extra headroom as a Deluxe Reverb cuz your voltages will be much lower than the brutal 415VDC running in those things.

what do you guys envision would be the result from the lightning using a 6v6 power section instead of the el84....?

I'm guessing, as my earlier post suggests, that the 2 results would happen:

Cleaner headroom -- (or not...doesn't the majority of the lightning's distortion come from the preamp stage?)

Longer tube life - it's widely known that the el84 simply can not take the beating that a 6v6 can take...

However, I'm curious to hear what you guys feel would be results not mentioned here....

discuss...

The Lighting is capable of a fair amount of power tube overdrive with EL84s since the OD if you just look at them funny. It also does the preamp OD thing pretty well, but it is not huge in this area. The 2 blended together are part of what gives the amp its flexibility.

You would get more clean headroom by switching to 6V6s for sure (or maybe not considering the lowish voltages for a 6V6). The tubes would last a very long time at those voltages. The tone of the amp would change sigfinicantly as 6V6s are more transparent than the very colorful 84s.

Here's a thought. The Lightning chassis is HUGE and easily has enough room for an extra set of sockets. Why not wire up both types so you can switch between them?

Seriously. It wouldn't be hard to do.

I contemplated this as well. Some day perhaps.

I just spent the past 20-30 minutes figuring what I would need to do to get this done...it doesn't seem that bad, but alas, would require another mouser/hoffman order (not to mention a call to Bob @ eurotubes)...wish one would carry the other's stuff and vice versa...

So for now, I'm going to forge ahead with the regular lightning plan...and once I get the sucker built, I'll reevaluate....

Going to start wiring up the chassis this afternoon....

A schematic showing what has to be done would be nice, too.

Steve,

do you think the cathode cap needs changing as well or can I make the 6v6 mod with just changing the cathodr resistor?

No. The cathode cap can stay the same.

if you changes the power transformer to a deluxe reverb trans for the increased voltage it would add the extra head room right.

Another idea would be to get a SS copper cap from Ted BBQ and have him design it to not provide any voltage drop....

Then you'll get a good 20-30 volts on the B+ for the 6V6s...

I'm actually planning to do the 6v6 conversion on my lightning and another amp very shortly...Another set of 3l84s just crapped out on me...I'm getting sick of them!

You can try a 5U4GB for some extra volts as well, as long as the PT can handle the extra 1 amp on the heaters for it.

i am starting a 6v6 lightning but an thinking of using a 340 0 340 transformer . Would anything need to be changed in the filtering circuit or would it be better to mix in some deluxe reverd values?
