Frank and I are both just starting out on an sIII build and this post will be used to track progress, ask the usual silly questions etc. I have just started mounting turret lugs on to my board. My first build will be a head but I want to follow up pretty quickly with a combo but I have not yet picked a speaker format.

Oh Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!
Now I've got pressure!!

Nigel, I gaurantee you that it will take me aproximately 10 times as long as you to complete this build!

Heck, the chassis hasn't even arrived yet...and I'll still have to drill holes and get faceplates made up...order additional components, tubes....

I'll be lucky if this bad boy is done before my daughter is born in mid january...

That'll really take the cake, I wont even be able to crank the sucker.....with the new baby in the house!!

So, what iron are you going to use?
And what tubes do you have planned?

Don't forget to post pics like these from one of my customers. He's a newbie! Pretty good eh?

Maybe this will both help you out and inspire you!

I've got an s2 set that's been collecting dust down here since july or august...

Tubes? When the time comes, I'm probably going to give the russian mil-specs a try...

I'm going to use a PT that I picked up locally which looks about the right specs 150mA on 275V per side tap but if it is not good enough I have a 370FX not being used. I have a 125E for the OT but I might try the NSC deluxe reverb replacement to see what it sounds like. Tubes will be from my stock of Russian military and I have some Sovtek 12AX7LPS spiral filaments I want to have a go with.

It will be interesting to hear your opinions on the Sprague Orange Drop caps. Nomally I use the Mallory 150s.
Good to hear a little variety.

I've got mallory150s in my lightning....but OJs in that 'other' amp.

I can't see how one would be able to claim they sound one way or another, unless you build two amps with the same parts/components...and the only difference between the two is the actual caps.

Regardless, since I plan to stick completely and utterly with convention on this sIII, I'm going to use mallory150s and I'm going to in large part, do away with the metal films...and use carbon films for this, just in case there's a certain mojo I've been missing in the resistor department. All my other amps have metal film caps....So I dunno.

I can't bring it to myself to start using carbon comps yet...I don't know if I'm that brave....

Guys, I tend to do what the builders did in the early days and just go with what I can get locally at the time. I'm not arguing one way or another over caps or resistors and I have read that people put great store in one or another however my ears would probably not be able to pick up the differences I am sure, tubes however I can percieve a difference and I have also had more failure/microphonics from the current production tubes of the likes of EH, Svetlana and Sovtek. My Bassman has a motley selection of caps and a mixture of carbons and metal film resistors but it is also has loads of mojo and I don't think I will change it. The next Bassman I do will have the Sprague ODs so that will be a good test. I'm not too much of a purist, if it sounds good to me it's OK. :-)

I dunno...

Enough guys at 18watt prefer the carbon film over the metal film, so I'm going to build this sIII with carbon films...

The problem, is finding carbon films larger than 1watt. Digikey and Mouser...I've been through both catalogs...cant seem to find em.

Most BOMs I have seen seem to move to metal oxide for the higher wattage resistors in the power supply area, as the signal path doesn't run through that area I would think logically it should not affect the tone but I may be wrong.

My builds typically use Carbon Compositon for the low wattage resistors. Carbon film or metal film for the input and wire wound for the high watage ones. Sometimes I can get the 2W carbon comp into the kits.

Having said all that, I will post a discertation on Carbon Composition versus Mojo some time. They do have their place in a vintage amp.

Carry on...
