There's a thread over at ax84.com that suggests that a board builder was badmouthing another one and graydon or gabi got a sue threat...

I'm surprised it has gone on as long as it has. There appears to be at least one commercial member who takes shots at the competition products at every opportunity. Not only low class, but also a little mean spirited too.

The complete scrubbing is a little overboard but Gabi has to be safe. The forum is a labor of love for him and some people don't respect the effort he puts in.

I think I was taking part in the thread in question. It was the second time in a couple of weeks that the same subject came up, so it made me suspicious. I think it was one guy posting under three nicks, basically agreeing with himself. One of his comments went way over the line. I suspect that someone emailed Ted about it.

Then again, it could have been something else entirely. :D

I've emailed the different admins and no one has responded. We can speculate all day (which is actually kinda fun). Looks like they are scrubbing all commercialism from the site to appease someone.

MarkB, do you care to elaborate on the subject of that thread?

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to take offence, there have been some near the mark threads even by regular forum members. I have no problems with constructive discussion but attacking someones products with no foundation stinks. I was hoping that the gentleman in question was going to start regularly contributing to the forum but certain mean minded people put pay to that. :(

MarkB, do you remember the title of that thread? We should be able to look it up in google's cache.

I looked it up, Google doesn't go into the post content but the original poster was "bignicky"

The gist is that one member threatened to sue all the admins at 18W for libel because of certain other members slagging his products. He has no grounds, but he is borrowing from the Dr Z / Randall Smith playbook.

Sure, it is an ugly situation and it never should have happened, but this member's response was very much uncalled for. He really should improve his products rather than threaten to sue everyone who doesn't like them.

The irony is I happen to agree with the offending member and even have some personal slagging to do about that certain other member. But I'm S-M-R-T enough to keep it to myself...

But if it were me, I would have taken 18W down and put the member's letter up instead for all the world to see. Wouldn't that be nice to have come up every time someone searched for amp stuff on Google!? Maybe I just have bigger cajones?

yeah, like whoa what the *^$%? Complete scrubbing is right - now I dont even know what the hell happened but I have hovered around the boards fort about a year now and I dont remember a Bignicky, is this a setup or what? - someone signing up under multiple nicks and accounts - then pasting all kinds of bad crap to eliminate 18W members as commercial competitors>? I dont think thats too underhanded for some people - but I always looked to 18w as the temperate board aside from the whole bnwitt affair which was remedied pretty quickly and adhered too by everyone.
Cheers
Charlie

The way I look at is that there was a member pushing the boundries of the rules (I though bnwit taught us all something) and the admins let it go on too long. The 18watt rules are we don't slag off other members. Bnwit was banned because he didn't respect other members and became insulting.

Even if a certain vendor has issues with their parts, constantly attacking him doesn't help the 18watt community. It would be better to welcome his products and address any issues to the vendor himself. This was more than the more common "the kit is good but I'd replace x" comments posted inresponce to kit questions. It was an attack.

Does this mean a certain vendor is going out of the 18 watt kit business? I doubt it, so all that's happened is a very sad result.

Just to add another observation - there are guys like Stephen, Gabi, Graydon and s2 who let their products speak for themselves. Bravo to them.

In any case, I've just lost a whole lot of respect for a couple of people. One of those people just lost my business.

amazing how much power the 18Watt board has.....I never took amp building THAT seriously LOL!
I suppose it's the primary income of some of these guys and they feel threatened by any opinion/comment/blather

I feel like I'm hiding in here from the fallout w/ everyone else after arriving late for the broo ha ha ;-)

Yeah,

I'm with s2. If I have the parties correct in this...both have lost my business...(one I might have used in the future, one I probably wouldn't have, but this takes the cake)....

The Dr Z/ Randall Smith playbook analogy is great...I love it, because it's so apropriate.

I wish the play was made on someone who had the balls to just turn around and say "f@#k you, hit me with your best scary lawyer letter" and see what happens.

It's way too often in this society that the "I'll Sue" threat is used...often an empty threat...but even if not, it's really abused...People are so afraid of the punitivte 50 million dollar McDonalds coffee burn, that they immediately cowtow as soon as someone with some fat on his frame, pushes the weight around and goes "I'm calling my lawyer!"

It's clear to me that when a manufacturer/builder/seller takes the 'slag others' aproach or the "drZ/Randall Smith - I'll sue yo' Ass" aproach...it's most often due to a failing business model....and it's an effort to point a finger, so you feel better about yourself in the morning.

This aproach is not at all limited to the amp business...look at the recorded music industry. File Sharing is the reason for relaxed sales!!! Never mind that the product you're trying to sell is sh*t!

I'm not saying that's what happened here....since I can only speculate as to the involved parties....

but it really seems that this is what happens these days.

You can't make money selling something that wont sell.....blame someone!
