I've been thinking for over a year about building Tweed Champ Based Class A WoodCross Amp. My daughter is getting the prototype. :D Meet the partner for the project Str@ I gave her for Christ-mass:

I started with a basic 5F1 Layout. Increased the filtering in the power stage and basic preamp values are pretty standard Champ. I added a Spitfire/Thunderbolt Volume and Tone Control and a Master Volume simular to the Bluesbuster Supreme SE (to keep her mom happy) that acts upon the Power Tube's Control Grid. The Output Transformer is the same as BBSSE, not a puny Champ OT. Added the BBSSE Clean/Mean Switch which happens to work more efficiently in this amp.

She idles about 25 to 50 volts higher than a standard Tweed Champ and that adds mo Clean Headroom. She is wired with my BBSSE Hi/Lo Power Switch so she can not only run a 6V6, but also 6L6/5881 and EL34/6CA7 Power Tubes.

While in the guts, I experimented with a Voicing Control using different Bypass Caps on the First Gain Stage and the Hot Switch from the Version 3 Thunderbolt amps. They work great but I decided to not add them to Mandi's amp because I want it to be simple as can be for her. These will be added as an option to or may be standard in production Thunderchamps though.

Interesting, I am considering either a champ or a deluxe for my daughter who has just taken an interest in my telecaster. She finds the guitar is just the right size and weight for her so I guess I can kiss that one goodbye :-)

Cool little amp. Wouldn't mind hearing some clips some day.

Stephen;

I'll see what I can do about a few clips once I get the speaker in for it. It is a mean lil machine with either an old RCA Blackplate 6V6GT or JJ 6V6S. It's absolutely BAD with a JJ EL34L!

Sounds like a Champ with a Sptifire front-end. Would that 'sort of' sum it up?

Stephen;

Yep, that would sorta sum it up. Mandi's amp has 2 to 3 times the filtering as a standard 5F1 Champ. 47uF>22uF>16uF and the first node resistor is an 8K2 instead of a 10K. This is one of the quietest amps I have ever built. Since the pics were taken, I have removed the 22uF Bypass Cap from the first stage for a bit more clean headroom.

Yep, Basically a Spitfire Front End. 470P Bright Cap instead of 180P. Changed the BIG Orange Drop .01pF on the Tone Control for a much smaller Xicon. It also has a Master Volume that Pat at STF shared with me that he offers with his Champ kits as an option.

I stuffed a board last night to build one of these for myself and this amp will contain all the mods that I have not used on her amp. Voicing Control on the first stage using caps. NFB Switch, Hot Switch to kill the Tone Control.

Thanks!!!
