Just wondering why no standby switch is in the amp. Is there some benefit to this? I'm planning on grabbing the Lightning kit now that I am gainfully employed, any tips (reference material, build tips, etc.) for a very novice electronics enthusiast would be greatly appreciated. thanks, great site!

As long as the 5AR4 rectifier tube is used, there is enough of a warm up delay that the standby switch is not required. Some people but a ON-ON-OFF switch and wire it so that the second position is the standby, and the third is full power.

Some amps don't have a standby if they have a tube rectifer, e.g. Fender Deluxe.

Westlabs sells a very nice 0n-On-Off switch that I used in mine. They are a bit pricey, but I just like that added warm and fuzzy feeling I get when I use the old standby switch.

(In fact, when I build a Tweed Deluxe, I normally put a standby switch in the now-useless ground switch.

I'm planning to complete my lightning this week. (building the cabinet tonight). My tips would include:

- Getting transformers from Trinity since they're the OEM matchless set and because he offers so much free info for us.

- Forget cloth wire. I thought it would be cool, but my solid core cloth wire has been such a pain to work with because it's not flexible and breaks right when you're "there" in the right spot.

Those are my tips.

For what its worth, I've built a lot of amps with nothing but solid core cloth pushback wire. I've never had a piece break. I do use a nice thick gauge though. I love the stuff.

+1 on the transformers comment.
