A 2 channel with EF86 second channel V-T control. Regular 15 on the other channel. V-T-B-MV.
Plan on using the Trinity transformers because they're so good and the OEMs are just getting too expensive..

Use the same chassis too, which is easier to build around.

I guess it's like a DC15 :D

Who needs 30 watts anyway?

Any comments?

Funny you should mention that. I was thinking about some mods to the 15. (still waiting for parts :( ). If I may hazard a few off the cuff segestions.

1) Rock/Roll switch - a switch to change the voicing of the tone stack (for the non EF86 side) to be more humbucker friendly. i.e. less scoop, more mids, some bass roll off perhaps.

2) Channel switching (hehe)

3) Mid Boost (you know the deal)

4) I might suggest tweking the input impedance but this is just a swag on how to get a little bit more touch sensitivity in the #1 input.

5) TBD....

I'll call you tomorrow.

Sounds like a great idea (pun sort of intended).

I like Larry's ideas also, sounds like it will be very versitile and a great match to go with the SIIIv6.

Besides, I have to start thinking about next winter's build :D .

I have the "Marshall" sound covered, I guess I need something "Voxish / Matchless" and something "Fendery" to round out the stable.

I would guess, since I haven't heard a Lightning or it's inspiration that this will be something in the "V" vein?

Something Vox-ish - probably. Maybe a boost switch. Just getting some ideas together.

I'm starting a layout for a prototype 'TC15'. It will be built in our standard chassis and use our transformer set using the 5K impedance tap.

Channel 1 will use one EF86 and Channel 2 will use two 12AX7's. Channel 2 will use a 12AX7 with a parallel-triode circuit and the interactive bass and treble controls from the 15. The EF86 in Channel 1 will consist of the EF86 [high-gain pentode] and a six-position tone switch. Will include a cut control and post phase inverter master volume effective on both channels. The power amp will be the same two EL84 power tubes 5AR4 rectifier from the 15.

So, controls are:
Ch. 1 - Volume, Tone. 2 inputs - Hi, Lo; Ch. 2 - Volume, Bass, Treble 2 inputs - Hi, Lo. ; Cut, Master Volume.

It will fit perfectly into our existing chassis! :D

Sounds like it will be very different sounding than the SIIIv6, which is good, I want to have a range of tones to experience eventually.

I'm looking forward to how things progress on this, sounds like I may be closing in on my next amp build project. What a great hobby!

Hi Stephen,
Talk to abmarie he's already done this awhile. I had a chance to hear and play it, sounded great. I think he even use a BBQ channel switch board to change preamp channels.

:) I've done a simple two channel Lightning with ef86 channel. I did it as a head to minimise the microphonic tendancy of the ef86 tube. In the two that I've built, one had an 18w trem style tonestack; the other a Richie 5e3 type tonestack. Here's some pics (however I'd suggest using a 47k or 68k dropping resistor - you need to get the ef86 voltage around 300v after the dropping resistor).
You also need to shock mount the ef86 as best as you can (I used silicon dampeners on the tubes and socket).

Thanks Barry. Looks like you took the DC voltage right on the second 33 uf filter cap after the choke. No special filtering. No hum?

:) Stephen .. the ef86 preamp has it's own filtering. In the first diagram you'll see a 16uf filter cap (voltage should show 450v for this rather than 630v) on the other side of the 22k dropping resistor that is shown (note: I think it's better to use a 47k here). I brought the ef86 channel into the other side of the PI (ala 18watt style); mainly because I didn't want to drop gain through the Lightning channel voltage divider.
Hope that helps.

Yes, I see it now. I just overlooked it. I'll let everyone know how this goes.

Bary Did you make any voltage measurements on the EF86? I just got the amp to work. 15 side voltages sem fine. Looking for a reference for the EF86 channel to check against.

Configuration
---------------
EF86 Pin 1 - 178 - 2.2M to B+ side
Pin 2- 7 tied to ground
Pin 3/8 - 7.4V - 2K2/25uF to ground.
Pin 6 - 250V - 330K to B+ side

Used 20uF/22K dropping resistor from B+.
Voltage at B+ side of 330/2M2 - 347V
Getting sound but not enough volume.

Used the Matchless config.

Thoughts?
