It is Good!

'Regular' 15 channel is crisp, jangly. Everything you'd expect from the original 15. Nice to have the Cut control in there. It makes a noticeable difference.

86 channel is very different from the 15 channel. Got a nice grind to it. Not over the top. Very tasteful. You can go from reasonably clean to thick grind. Not quite metal (sorry JR). We'll see if it's enough. 8) Tone contour control makes a noticeable difference in thickening up the sound.

Cut and Master work on both channels. Nice touch there!!

You can jump channels too. :D Now that will be fun!!

Following the standrad Trinity layout scheme, it's quiet. Have some mechanical tone switch noise that needs investigation.

It passed test #1. It will be in lbet's hands soon.

Went over to listen to lbet play the TC-15. We will have to wait for his clips & comments, but I really liked what I heard. [hard not to with lbet at the controls].

The two channels are very, very different in sound. That's a very good thing! The 15 channel is still gorgeous & jangly with a bite. The 86 channel grinds beautifully and cleans up nicely when you roll back the guitar volume. It was set on fattest sound. It will be hard to wait for the clips. Oh, and did I mention apparently infinite sustain.. 8)

Ok, here are the first clips I have for the TC-15. I used a switcher that let
me plug into both channels at the same time and swtich between them.
But I spent most of my time in the EF-86 channel with the volume at about
1 o'clock.

The cab was a Bluesbreaker 2x12 with tone tubby alnicos. It was double
miced with an SM-57 and a condenser. THe guitar is my les paul custom.

I find that the amp has two very different channels. Once sweeter and one
tougher. Many of us know and love the Trinity 15. The trinity 15 channel
on the amp is just like that. Although, the use of Trinity transformers does
affect the tone. Just a little more compression and grind that the standard trannys.

The EF-86 channel brings a new world of crunch and munch. That channel
has quite a bit of meaty midrange gain but, when you roll back the
volume, it cleans up super well. It sounds really nice like that and most of
the clean parts on the clips are done that way. The first clean section on
TC_15_1.mp3 clip, where the guitar is in the middle position, almost
sounds like a tele! I'll have to try a strat there and see if we have
quackage as well. When you turn up the guitar you get nice rhythm
crunch AND creamy leads depending on guitar settings. See the beginning
of clip 2 for the cream.

Sweet. Lawrence, could you tell us the tone settings for each mp3 as well?

Is mp3 one the EL-84 and mp3 two the EF-86?

Hey James,

The clips are pretty much all the EF86 channel. The tone swtich was on the second last notch' it's the second most trebley notch on the tone control. The volume was a little more than half way up. That was enough to get the channel to break up with the les paul.

The more you turn up the master the more it starts to sing. I also find the cut control instrumental in fine tuning the sound of the amp.

Wow, thanks. :D That EF86 is so different, it just rocks. No more bite needed and apparently, lots of gain available.

Did I hear Rebel Rebel? Just a few bars? I think you could absolutely nail it based on that second sample. Very chimey and gritty. Right on!

It would be very interesting to set it up with the 8K tap and do it again. Nice to have the option with those Trinity transformers! Also, we'll try out a 5Y3 to drop the voltage down 20 volts or so & see if it makes much of a difference. I expect it would be noticeable.

More to come!

Good trax, Larry! Does a good job highlighting the sounds on the channel. Nice jangly sound and really sweetens up when you crank the guitar volume. Sounds good on all pickups to my ear. Nice!

I don't know, coco, that channel might just have enough gain for my taste. I like super clean and super gain....mmmmmmmm! Where does the line form?

One thought. Your 15 has 50 watt Schumacher OT in it so it would have less compression and grind than the OEM or Trinity trasnformers. I remember testing it head-to-head against a 15 with the OEM 15 watt set with you and Wendell Ferguson jamming/testing and recall the clarity of your custom version. I think our set is an excellent match to the OEMs.

I do want to change the impedance to 8K and re-try though. Might be a nice option to incorporate into the design, and besides, it's just sitting right there, waiting to be used!

Same tube array. How does the EF86 side's tonestack compare the the Vox? I'm thinking about converting my Lighting to this, God willing I don't screw it up. lol.

I assume you're not maintaining the mismatch of the Lightning OT? Have you tried a speaker mismatch to the same ends?

Part of the sound is that mismatched OT. Fortunately, using our OT, we can switch bewteen 5K & 8K. The clips were using 5K impedance. We plan to do it with 8K as well. Would have less edge to it.

We have indeed done speaker 'mismatches' to the same effect. Use a 16 ohm speaker on the 8 ohm setting with an 8K impedance OT and you will get a 4K reflected impedance.

Makes a difference.

If you have time, can you explain the difference between a tone selecter knob and a tonestack? I had assumed the tonestack was just the circuit that shaped the tone.

It'll still be really cool to convert my Trinity 15 to this.

A tone control has a continuously variable effect on the Bass &/or Treble. The Tone Contour is a High Pass filter that rolls off the Bass at 6 different frequencies. Think of it as 'Thick' to 'Thin' sound control. Benefits of the Tone Contour are quick dial-in of new tones and an easy return to your preferred settings.
