My first question is:
Why does Trinity offer an amp kit without the transformer or tubes? Why not the complete kit? I would like to buy everything in the same place assemble it and "fire it up".

I'm not an experienced electronics technician but do re-wire guitars and have built computers and tinkered etc. I've that due to the high voltage there are many dangers, does the kit instructions guide us in avoiding an early grave?

Trinity offers the transformers separately because a lot of people just buy the transformers. There that good.
You can order the whole package together. Total prices are around $500 -600.00, which is the norm for a great kit. I just ordered my new TC-15 and I bought the whole kit. Including transformers.
The instructions are excellent and will guide you thru the build with no problem. :D This is the second one I've bought and I'm not alone. Once a Trinity.. well you get the picture.
And Stephen has the best, if you need help, he's there for ya (not to mention everyone else). So great service.

I work hard for my money and spend it wisely. That's why I'm here.

You're not the only person to mention these facts- it seems that reputation and going by the sound files reason enough to buy from Trinity. I just hope I don't blow myself up!

You won't blow yourself up. Stephen's instructions are good.
The problem is, is once you build 1 you have to have 2! Your going to love it and welcome to the community
Later,
Jac

Wait, I can't resist. I don't know if you'll blow yourself up "bubbleboy". I guess it depends on how thick your "bubble" is

Take your time, read the instructions and the safety rules a few times and you'll be fine.

I never soldered anything except water pipes before my first
Trinity kit and it turned out fine!

Trying to get some practice time in, it's been a week again

Oral surgery last Friday, went well, other issues slowly healing. I have to e mail you to discuss the trip, make sure you have the right doc's, border isn't as easy as it used to be.

To bring things back on topic, Bubble boy, I think you will find out that you will get a lot of support here, as long as you can tolerate the demented cast of "regulars" that Stephen allows to gather here.

Stephen knows what he is talking about and is a wealth of information, some of us, like myself, are an enthusiastic bunch of learners who try hard and have gotten bit by the amp building bug. There is a lot of build info in the forums from members with a lot of good hints and suggestions if you have the time to go through them.

Oh, and on why Stephen doesn't include the tubes. Lot's of builders have collections of tubes, so they don't need more, some are happy with the new tubes and many go the NOS route. Tubes are more involved than the amps are!

Good luck :D

Thanks for the comments. Since we do build amps as well, we have tubes if you're interested. As mentioned, tubes can get personal. We use JJ unless otherwise requested, but have a collection of NOS/Vintage tubes as well.

Boy, I've been "downsized" to a demented regular.
I'm depressed, now I'm just going to have to build another amp

Hey BB,

You should have no problems with a Trinity kit. I was in the same boat as you (not a tech but do some guitar re-wiring & some other electronic twiddling) and I had no issues with my build. In fact, it fired up on the first try and sounded good. I did have a couple of minor tonal issues, but I still wonder if it was just me getting used to the tone rather than real problems. I did tweak it a little, and there's a couple more tweaks I'm going to do but that's more for the fun of it really. I love my sIII more every day!

Stephen & fam have created what is basically a paint-by-numbers kit, and that's a good thing for the average joe like myself. Seriously - I've had more trouble putting together some model kits. Once you get your soldering technique down it really goes smoothly.

The other comments about service are 100% on the money. Stephen should the poster boy for customer service!

Kirb

Sorry Jac, How 'bout I promote you to demented irregular

That better (I think I qualify for either, I know I have enough loose screws to open a hardware store)

Off topic, you get my e mail?

Back on topic: Between Stephen and the others here who are much more talented than I, there should be no problems putting together any of the Trinity kits if you take your time, follow the directions and ask questions when you need to. Like I've said, if I can build a great sounding amp, anyone can :D

Hi All,
I am thinking about building an 18 watt amp basically I want a low power section (under 40 watts) and I want a two channel amp and keep cost low I want a GOOD clean channel and a OD channel.. here is what I’ve got and my cost so far.

1. Hammond M3 iron $45

2. metal project box $26

3. ceramic tube sockets $2 ea. X 7 $14

3. phenolic board $35
NOTE: I got an AWSOME deal
On this stuff I have enough to build
10 amps!!

4. JJ EL84 Tubes (matched pair) $18

5. EH 12AX7 tubes $4 ea x 5 $20
===========================================

GRAND TOTAL (so far LOL!!! ) $158

Now keep in mind all figures are coming from my memory and we all know my memory is BAD !! ( too much partying in the 80’s I think LOL!! ) so anyway there you have it my 18 watt project (so far) I am open to any and all suggestions

Bill

You could use an EF 86 on the OD channel and really clean up the other channel of an 18 w, lightning or even lite. 2 channel lite - if that makes sense??
There's always the TC-15 which is kind of in that direction.

Hey, I resemble that remark.

I built a sIII V6 in January from Coco's kit. Only my second build. It turned out pretty darned awesome ( no thanks to my A.D.D.). See ( or listen to ) the clips Clammy Sunday and Clammier Monday. Please ignore the clams, but listen to the TONE. Also, listen to lbet's clips. He has the chops and the tone. It'll help clear the "clammy" taste from your palate.
