Here's a good tread that explains the mod in detail. Takes a while to get through it though:

Cheers guys! That Metro thread is good. Larry has modified the Ken Fischer MV (basically a dual ganged 250K pot replacing the 220K grid feed resistors). I'm going to try installing it on my 18 watter and see what it does.

I'm going to give it a go myself. I have a feeling it will be disappointing for the normal channel though as you rely so much on slamming the power tubes to hear the magic.

Thats the problem, you'll never find a master volume that doesnt suck tone. I guess thats why NMV amps sound the best :D

With an 18W, as most of the distortion is produced in the power amp, an MV will just make the amp sound cleaner as you turn it down. TMB 18Ws are different because they have more preamp and PI distortion, and an MV is actually some use with them.

I must admit i've been fiddling with the amp a bit since installing the power dampener. I quite like it. I modded the amp to take EF86s which sounds quite nice. Using a strat i can get a nice just overdriven tone with relatively low volume. While it isnt as good a tone as it is bypassed, the amp sounds great. I think decent tubes help a fair bit. I'm curently running a Mullard EF86 in V1, a Mullard ECC83 in the PI and two Mullard EL84s in V3 and V4.

I really need to wait for neighbours to holiday so i can crank it. They go soon...
