Thought I'd start a new thread for the 86 build.
Funny, started out blue metallic, now it's purple metallic  I don't know, cause I suck at painting. But it looks cool.
Now before you see these be aware, the board was too long. So it screwed everything up. I had to adjust everything.
Every part has to be where it's at, although I think it turned out nice. :D :D
I'm going to start the wiring now with the board.
I can't wait.

All holes were drilled by eye. The next one will be mathematical. :D
So nof course nothings on.
Did my best.

Hey jac, were you using the ef86 layout from the 18watt archives? I assume it uses the EF86 tied directly to the PI via the tone stack with no extra gain stages?

From waht i've heard the EF86 is lower gain than one of the triodes in a standard ECC83.

Where did you get that idea? The opposite is the case. EF86s have *lots* of gain. But they don't get on well with the low impedance of most typical tone stacks.

Ah, must of got my wires crossed :P Cheers for pointing that out. When you say it doesnt like the low impedance tone-stacks, what exactly does that refer to? What kind of mods are required to the typical tone stack to bring out the best in the EF86?

Wicksy,
Yes, I'm using the layout from 18 Watt. Dartanion originally posted it.
If you go to my pics, then main folders, under turret is the layout.
I'm using a Hammond 270fx tranny that I had for this build, so I'm now thinking to change from an EZ81 to a 5Y3 OR 5AR4 to drop the voltages down. Gotta figure 0out how to wire it . :? But, basically sticking to the layout :D The few guys that built it had all good things to say, so... my turn

Cool! I'm probably just going to mod my Ampmaker 18 watt lite. I should be able to piggy-back the nessacary components onto some tag strip and bolt it to the chassis and connect it up bypassing whats already on the pre-amp stage of the turret board.

I've tried it out! It sounds pretty good. I'm running a nice Heerlen (Dutch) Mullard EF86. With LeeMo's dampener mod it sound quite nice and crunchy, especially with a strat. Bypassing the dampener and cranking full whack with a Rangemaster clone gives me an awesome Layla tone with my strat 8)

I omitted the 68K ressitor from the inputs though. I guess this wont make much of a difference will it? The Ampmaker 18 watt lite i built didnt have them.

On the TC-15, we opted for a tone contour / network rather than variable tone control. Wonder if anyone did the same on a lite? It's subtle but effective. The EF 86 has a tone 'o tone and there's the guitar controls too.
