I put together a pictorial documentary of my recent TC-15 kit build at:

Any comments or critique would be greatly appreciated.

The pictorial is quite excellent. Good pictures and commentary. Your build looks very neat and tidy so I'm not surprised it worked out for you.
Thanks for sharing that and it's great to hear another TC-15 out there!

Thanks for your comments, Stephen. I'm planning to record an audio clip with the new amp this weekend. I'll post it ASAP.

Thank you for the comment, 9-Pin. You are welcome.

I posted a clip of this amp last night. If anyone is interested it's at:

This was a really good build summary that I didn't want to loose it so I archived it here as well:

http://www.trinityamps.com/ForumGallery ... /combo.htm

And the accompanying clip archived here:

http://www.trinityamps.com/ForumGallery ... tonjes.mp3

This shows how you can build an awesome amp with the musical results as well.

Thanks!!

Thanks for taking a look and commenting, AG. I've got a new 1-12 combo cabinet on order from Stephen @ Trinity, so this amp is going to look as good on the outside as it does inside! :D I'll post more pics when the cab is done.

Hey dtonjes,

I'm building a TC-15 combo too. Had the kit nearly as long as you, but can't find the time and energy at the same time (two kids under 6). I wanted to compliment you on your work and have referenced your pictorial a few times, already.

One of the challenges with building this as a combo is the vibrations caused by the speaker in the same cab as the chassis and how they could affect the EF-86 tube.

Here is my attempt. Have no idea if it'll work. I took a 3/4" foam pipe insulator and cut off about a 3/4" - 1" piece.

Image

Then I cut about 1/2 way through half way down the piece.

Then I enlarged the hole for the tube socket in the chassis and pushed the foam into the hole, so that half protrudes on either side of the chassis.

Image

Then, i pushed the mounting screws through the foam and hopefully this will keep the screws isolated from the chassis.

From the tube side:

From the inside:

Using this method, there is some play in the tube socket to absorb the vibrations, but I can still get a tube in and out.

The proof will be in the playing. We'll see!

JP-

Great idea! Please let us know how it works. I'm fighting the EF-86 vibration problem too.

Has anyone else come up with a way to reduce the microphonic sound from this tube in a combo amp? Are certain brands of EF-86 tubes quieter (i.e. NOS)?

I've seen a number of elaborate things, but I am a simple guy and if this works, then I'll leave it. I plan to buy some high temperature O-rings to put around the glass portion to further dampen vibes.

I'll let you know, once I get it finished and coco and I get the thing in the cab.

dtonjes, I wonder if you could post the voltages? That would be a good reference for others. I know you still don't have a cab so at least it would be easier to do this!

Here's what my voltages look like:

http://gracemissionary.org/tc15/tubevolts.htm

AC Mains Voltage is 123VAC
All tubes are JJ Electronic

No hurry on the cab, Stephen. I'm using the speaker in another combo amp right now, with the chassis sitting on top. It has a really cool "amplifier gear-head" look, eh? Kind of fragile on the road this way though...

Update: I have had my colourful combo in service for a while now and have had the opportunity to play at BOOM on a few occasions and no issues with microphonics. I guess my socket damper works!

Hi JP:

Thanks for the update! I'm planning to use your idea in my TC-15 as well. I'm waiting for a day off when I can pull the socket out and give it a try...

Are you using the EF-86 side or Channel 2 (12AX7 side) more? I started out with Ch. 1 only but am using an A/B box now to switch between the 2 channels. Ch. 2 for rhythm and CH. 1 for leads. Very nice.

Later,
Dan

Hey Dan.

I use Channel 2 more right now. My tastes lean toward punk and heavy rock, etc. and I find I can get the scooped sound I like with that channel. I have to remind myself to keep trying the crunch and munch, the high and low on both channels as well, lots of choices, which lead to lots of different inspirations, which I wouldn't be playing with my Marshall. I still LOVE this amp!
