Have you built a JTM45 :?: We'd like to hear about it :!:

How you built it; parts used; troubles building it; tips for builders; results.

Cheers!

I’d like to build one but…….. Have all the parts but getting it put together is another story. Using a BBQ chassis, Marstran transformers and KT-66’s. Had to modify the chassis so the PT would drop in. Attached the choke and OT and attempted to install the tubes as a test fit. Nope, too tight. Had to tweak the iron placement to get the KT-66’s in, only have 3/32â€

I built one. I hang out over at the Metroamp forums and used the instructions by George that he sends out with all of his kits. I hoarded the bits over about 18 months. I got my chassis and face plates from Ceri@tone, the OT, an RS deluxe clone from Brian Wallace, the PT and choke from George at Metroamp (Heyboer and Mercuy Magnetics respectively), the board came from Ray Domzalski and the components came from a mixture of scrounged from work/Ebay/fellow forumites and Metroamp. The tubes came from Tube Tramp.

There were no problems other than me having the OT primaries wired the wrong way around so i got positive instead of negative feedback. That only took five minutes to sought.

Here are some pictures:

Started out building a JTM45. Ended up a JTM45 EL34 power section mated with with a clean channel and a JCM800 channel. Started with a blank chassis.

I'm just starting to get parts together for one.
I've found getting trannies a pain here in the UK, so I'll probably end up getting Ceri@tone.
I've got the built up board and faceplates on order at the moment, should be here any day. The original plan was to source the heavier parts in the UK, and use a non standard chassis size, bit I've found that to be expensive, so much so that it's ended up cheaper to get parts from Malaysia, thanks to the strong Pound! :?

Martin, you'll not do bad ordering from Ceri@tone. Nik's stuff is top notch. The chassis and front panels for my build above came from him. I would say that ordering from the States isnt that bad. I had an RS deluxe clone from Brian Wallace and shipping was about £17. Not bad for a transformer. I did catch his 20% sale though!

Coco, are you thinking of putting together a kit? The worst bit of gathering parts yourself is the postage cost. While my build cost about £550, about £100 of that was shipping costs. Metroamp would be your direct competition concerning a JTM45 kit.

Cheers Wicksy. Nice job on that amp BTW.

I can get both trannies and the choke (shipped) for USD250, or GBP125.
I asked if Danbury would make me the trannies, and they wanted GBP140 for the 2 trannies alone! Then add the choke and postage.

I've found that all the US sources for a tranny set are far more expensive, especially with shipping.

Annoying that you can't get them in this country, at a reasonable price. There are hammond items I could get from Bluebell, but with postage and VAT, that lot came to nearly GBP200!

Yeah, about £125 is what i paid for my iron. Not bad IMO. Nik's is cheaper but the quality is still there. I'd say go with whatever your wallet can handle

Just checked them out. They look pretty good! Nice price too for the set. That might be the ticket for Martin if the shipping costs arent too high to the UK.

They look ideal, and very reasonable price.
Shipping to the UK would be the big question mark for me.

Can you tell me how much it would be?

Well I ordered a chassis and tranny set from Ceri@tone today, as it seemed easiest.
So now I've got all the big bits, and just need to order all the pots, switches etc.
I'll be making my own head cabinet again.
Can't wait to get started! :)

TAD is pretty good. An excellent selection of bits in stock. I'd recommend using Allen Bradley Carbon Comps and TAD branded mustard clones.

Posted This in the TT section by accident in the wrong area. Did you see that TAD is now offering a KT-66 :D

JTM-45 w/ KT-66. How sweet is that :D

I built the JTM45 Metro kit last month. My first amp build. Excellent PDF high res pics and a lot of "hand holding" in the instructions and I was totally successful. I could not have bulit it otherwise. What a thrill for it to fire up right! I was really nervous that I would screw up something major.
