The Lightning layout shows 2 shielded wires from the input jacks to a terminal strip next to V1, then two 68k resistors converging on pin #2 of V1.

I'm sure there's an obvious reason for this, but is it possible to connect the two 68k resistors at the jacks instead and then run a single shielded lead to V1?

A possible answer just occurred to me - is it because grounding the shield on each lead is easier with the shielded wires connected directly to the jacks?

Thanks for your help.

Chip

Chip,

There is a good reason to follow this. It is to reduce hum and noise pickup. I highly recommnend that you put those 68K as close to the tube socket pins as possible.

Done!

Stephen, thanks for the explanation - knew there had to be a reason.

Thsi might sound nuts, but if you're still getting some noise, I actually had one case where I kept pin 2 and 7 connected, but I attached one 68k to pin 2 and the ohter to pin 7. It helped get rid of some trace hum. That's all I needed to know. The coolest tricks on building amps seems to me to be how to keep them quiet. They don't always make a lot of sense.
