Steven,
I am in the same boat. I have been thinking about a Metroamps Superbass. I am afraid that the Bassman might be underpowered? I wonder what ever happened with bnwitt's Marshall Major project?

Marshall Major? Holy cow!!

Man, knowing what I know now...I dont think I'd own or build a tube amp bigger than 30-40 watts. I can't imagine having a 200 watter lying around....

was thinking something a little more uncomon, might do a trainwreck, always could do a 59 super lead so i could be jimi of maybe not jimi but have a lot of volume any way, what about an ef86 front end with a super lead 4 el34 power section, thay would be uncomon.

just tring to brain storm any thoughts. ?

Frank,
I agree for guitar, but pushing air for bass is a little different.

What sorta bass sound in what sort of setting? There's all sorts of answers, only some of which are good in certain instances. (A good 50-60 watts can sometimes be just fine for bass, like old Ampeg flip tops.)

Well, let's start with a low powered version. The Bassman was not 300W.
Basic amp, minimal frills, for a non-professional player.

Well, the Tweed Bassman was a 50 Watt Bass amp before it was hijacked by the blues and rock players. With ten years or so trying things I think Fender got it right in the 59 model then everyone got sold the high power is best theme from the manufacturers. I have used the 59 with a bass and I think it sounds great, I was thinking of putting together another bass amp prior to building the 5F6A but I won't bother now. If they don't like it it's an easy sell at the end.

So, the circuit you recommend for a Bassman build is the 5F6A then?

The blackface Bassman heads can actually be pretty good for bass. what's good about them is there's less preamp gain and more voltage swing on the power stage, with sag-free solid state rectification and some hefty output iron. Kind of goes the same for Showman heads, too.

I think the irony has been pointed out that the 59 Bassman reissue is electronically a better bass amp than the original do to higher plate voltages and the solid state rectifier. If you need to do tube rectification on a new build for bass, use two as was original equipment - much less sag.

Yeah, I was pleased with the 5F6A build but remember I built it as a guitar amp not for bass. Not being a bass player and only using it on lowish volumes works OK but I have not cranked it with the bass so can't comment on the rectifier sag, however it wouldn't be too difficult to replace the tube rectifier or maybe even use a copper cap?

I would love to make a mid 70's SVT. I had the pleasure of using one for a few years in the late 80's and really don't think there's an amp out there that sounds as good with my Jazz Bass. Sonic nirvana... Perhaps a Portaflex B15 comes closer then most.
