I was in the market for a new multimeter/tester. I have been using a cheap Canadian Tire one I have ($20 - although it was fine for measuring Ac & DC voltages, & resistance).

I was looking at used Flukes - they are pricy - $200 and up for a model like the 179 with capacitance and frequency measuring....

Then today I picked up another Canadian Tire tester - with a large LCD display, autoranging, freq, capacitance and temperature measurments as well as the standard stuff.

$59 - and it looks pretty decent. Worth a try I guess, for the price.

I have that same CT meter (I got mine on sale for $30 though :P ). It's a decent meter, pretty solid.

My only gripe is it's capacitance function is fairly weak. Can't record in the lower registers which I find quite inconvenient.

I paid $261 for my model 21 fluke in 1985, it has been used in a maintenance role ever since. Get the fluke and take care of it. It will last a lifetime.

I dint really "need" to measure caps... its just nice to double check to see if I have read the codes right.

This meter will do for now... until I get a deal on a used Fluke. Will keep my eyes open for a used 179 or something similar.... preferably in Canada. Lots of guys selling on ebay dont want to deal out of the continental USA.

I actually like my MM. It's just frustrating because I have a bag of generic picofarad caps and they're basically useless because I can't measure them. I don't trust codes, especially on cheap ceramic caps (bought them for pedal building)

Here's a great kit. I use mine all of the time . . . and it works great for the little guys.

Best of all, it's only $9

Also check out the oscilloscope. It's cheap and it's perfect for basic audio stuff
