How long do you guys leave contact adhesive to dry before you put them together? Do you time it so you have a few moments to pull it into place if need be?

Depends on the type. Solvent based Gen Purpose you have some time if you don't press too hard. Solvent based Heavy duty is less forgiving.
I don't use water base because it takes too long to dry.

Contact cement is pretty well instant contact adhesion.

The stuff i have made by Bostik, it's solvent based, quite a runny thin solution in a can. I just experimented with it by making some piping and it bonded after about 4 minutes.

I'll need to be confident to use it for a full amp covering.
