Salutations fellow DIYers.
My name is Clay and I'm a GASaholic, there I admitted it.

I'm about to get started on the 5E3 and am going to add the VRM as I go along.
I've read all the posts relating to the VRM and was wondering why the MOSFET gets
mounted against the chassis? I'm thinking it's for heat disipation? Otherwise, you could
solder everything to the small board, (including the 1M on/off pot), and have the VRM as
a standalone off of the 1M on/off pot.

Thanx to all, and that's probably not the last of my rookie questions.

cheers
Clay

Yup it's for heat disapation. If you dial your B+ down from say 350Vdc to 150vdc that's 200 volts across the device. If the current is even 100ma thats 20 watts of heat to get rid of!

So I could use a small heatsink and remote the board without issues?
I would imagine that wire length might become an antenna, so shorter is better, I guess.

I guess the main thing is not an issue with heat, but to make sure the MOSFET itself doesn't ground to the chassis????
