Now. I love EH pedals, has anyone filled this sIII with said tubes? Any favs? Any you would avoid?

12AX7 - Have used EH, EI, Shugaung, Mullard, RCA, JJ.

EH are old standby - decent, long lasting, not bad sounding
EI - great tube, very tending to microphonic
Shuguang - nice edge / gain to them; can be microphonic but good.
Mullard - Nuff said!
RCA- Black plates - very nice if you can ge NOS
JJ - avoid

EL84 - Recommend Russian Miltary ones. Check another thread in this forum
Bugle Boys - Very nice

Nice looking head Stephen, I think I have made my mind up to stick with a head for my build.

Really looking forward to getting your opinion on those Normal Channel mods Bob. I have an sIII I will finish this week-end for a customer. Maybe I can do some tweaking on it.

I did try some changes to the normal channel. I ended up just replacing r29 with a 150k resistor. That is the closest I could get to what I wanted. I am really hapy with it though. I didn't spend alot of time on it. I will this weekend probably and report back.

Its more interesting how I did it than the actual test results itself.... I have a rs232 pic chip relay board that I put resistors on 12 of the relays contacts, then wired it to r29 position. I am running IIS web server, and have an interface that can write to the serial port (same thing I do with my movable web cam). quickly programmed up an interface to switch the relays in and out, via mouse so I can hear the sound diff.

Anyway, with some more time I am sure I can get whatever sound I am looking for.

Thanks Stephen

Bob

Hery Bob,

Very Cool 8) - computer controlled, tone shaping sIII. I love it! That would be so much fun to play with. Awesome!

In the assembly manual, there's a Lightning. Maybe you'd be interested in one of those. I know, too well, the dark path down which Legin is headed ...

I've had very good luck with JJ preamp tubes...it's the el84's that piss me off....although, surprisingly, the el84s that were redplating on me a few months back, are no longer redplating...and they sound great....very weird...they've taken a legitimate beating....but they're still ticking.

But the tubes, I can't complain about....the ECC803s is a spectacular tube in a low-mid gain amp. I've also used the ECC83S and the ECC81 with no complaints....good sounding tubes.

I'm about ready to give a set of JJ 6v6's a go in a top secret build I'm in the middle of...

I don't know what you want to tell me but.... I am not getting your mail. Nor did I get your pm. I think my mail client just might be sending you to the junk drawer.

I'll try and find you.

Progress Reports?!! Bwahahahahaha

I still have a barely populated turetboard that's floating around in an undrilled aluminum chassis...

When Jeanne gets my faceplates to me (well, when I get the designs to her, more like) I'll be able to continue...

Until then, I'm working on my top secret 6v6 project....

My board is complete, front panel ordered and chassis ready to go. I have everything I need so this Friday is the day to put it all together. Pictures to come.
