I am wondering how you guys install the tolex on an inside round corner like the 18watt. Do you need to patch each inside corner?

I received my tolex but am waiting till I figure out how to do the corners.

IS there a tutorial on tolex somewhere?

Bob

Casey's tutorial is pretty darn good, but for the inside round corners, he doen't show you how. This is one corner you will need to patch!

This is what you need to do:

1. For each corner, cut in the tolex on the cab at 45 degrees, to about 1/4" away from the edge of the cabinet and to the center of the radius.

2. Cut a piece of tolex for a patch -triangle shaped. The piece should be sized to cover the "V" that will be left over from step 1.

3. Confirm that the patch will cover the area left uncovered when the tolex is folded over the radius corner. Then glue the 'patch" to the inside of the corner.

4. Apply glue to the patch and to the cabinet and tolex. Let it dry.

5. Fold the tolex over the cabinet and over the patch. Clean away the excess glue.

Hope that helps!

I thought so, but.... I tried finding these patches in the gallery and every 18watter I seen and could not see the work. I guess thats due to some of the great work that goes on.

Thanks guys

I use Lepages regular Contact cement, not the Water Based glue, but many people use water based Contact Cement.

Normally you have to apply contact cement on both surfaces. Is it the case here also?

Do you have to apply the contact cement on the tolex and the plywood?

Yes, Apply glue to the patch surface, the cabinet Toles and to the cabinet. Be sure to let it dry well. Then pull it over, press to stick it down.

If I use the 3M spray adhesive like I've seen a lot of people use, when do you spray it on.

Seems like it would be hard to control overspray.

So do you cut the tolex to size, then spray the tolex? Spray the cabinet (I suppose it would have to be taped off to control overspray)?

Also, can the cabinet be stained black first? Will the tolex hold properly if it's stained? Would like to be able to hide my mistakes (which I'm sure I'll have).

I have not used 3M spray due to it's cost and potential mess (=overspray) but I hear it's good.

Cut the tolex oversize and trim later.

Apply glue to both Tolex & wood (bare or stained, makes no difference. Make sure the stain is bone dry.) and then align carefully starting at one end. Work out any bubbles & work your way around the cab.

 I know people suggest to do one side of the cab at a time. I do three.

When it's dry enough to work, I lay the tolex on my bench. Then I position one cabinet corner on the tolex, holding the cab at an angle away from the tolex. Then I align the cab with the lines I laid out on the tolex and bring the cab & tolex together. I roll the cabinet down the tolex strip for all three sides, and work the bubbles out if I have to.

How does that effect how the piping gets put in. Seems like it would "stretch" over the piping groove that way.

I guess that's what I can't work out in my head; where to apply the adhesive, where to stop to do trimming, then trying to go back and spray the edges. Should the edges be left "dry" in order to lift and trim, or will the adhesive / glue be loose enough to lift and trim several times.

The thread about piping in the Trinity Talk forum should answer your question about the grooves, I guess Stephen does his three sides then cuts the tolex down the piping grooves?

No, it works fine. No problems if you cut it right down the middle.

I don't glue the edges until after the tolex is on the cab. Then I cut & trim, glue then fasten down.
