I’ve got a pair of mid sixties Siemens E84L tubes. Are they a safe substitute for an EL84 in my 18 watt? I know they are rated for higher plate voltages; not an issue in my amp as it only runs about 338 VDC. Just want to make sure they don’t draw too much current.

Does anyone here have experience with 6P14P (Russian EL84) power tubes? I have seen some high praise for the 6P14P-EV on other forums.

Been using some older Russian military surplus 6P14P''s in my sIII for years. Very robust and sound good, similar to regular EL84's but supposed to last much longer.

Good to know. I have a pair of 6P14P-EV's in route from the Ukraine. Will post impressions after I get a chance to try them out.

I installed the Siemens E84L tubes today. They’re working fine in the amp and sound great. These tubes were relabeled by RTC of France. Very rugged looking tube. Great overdrive sound. I changed out all the preamp tubes a week ago or so. I found a JAN Philips 12AX7WA in my stash and a couple of old Sylvania 12AX7 tubes.

What were your impressions of the moving from JJ to vintage with the preamp tubes? I have a couple of NOS Amperex E83CC (6681) that I plan on giving a go at some point.

Do you have an opinion yet on the Siemens power tubes vs the TAD you were using?

With the preamp tubes, probably quieter (as in less noise). Maybe a little more range to the tone which could be perceived as brighter. I’d say the same for the Siemens as well. The Siemens might be a bit louder too. The new production tubes that I had in it were fine really.

A very good friend of mine gave me a full set of old British Mullard ECC83 and EL84 tubes for my Plexi for my birthday this past week. You should hear this amp now! The tone is just amazing. Sweet, open clean tones and roaring Marshall crunch at the turn of the guitar’s volume knob. I love this amp.

That's a good friend you have there.

Yes indeed. The preamp tubes are labeled Rogers or Electrohome Canada and the El84’s are labeled Philips but they are all Blackburn, UK code tubes.
