 Post subject: Chokes: Pros / Cons?

My understanding of chokes is they smooth the ripple of current / power. So why do some amps have them and other don't?

Caps store voltage whereas chokes store current. You are correct in your statement that chokes smooth ripple in the power supply, but their real benefit is to provide extra current to the screens of the power tubes.

Generally speaking, an amp that uses a resistor in place of a choke will have a grittier sound and a looser bottom. A choke will make the amp sound a little more refined.

There aren't really pros or cons to chokes--it is just a matter of taste. I happen to like them.

You just need to make sure your screens are protected if you use a choke in place of a resistor since chokes don't drop as much voltage as an OT does.

To add to s2, I know when I built a certain 15 watt amp, it wasn't until I put the choke in, did all the hum finally go away.

And the funny thing, is that I took the choke away from the same type of amp and noticed no difference....so your milage may vary...

Did you notice any change in tone - to s2's point - Resistor = grittier sound, looser bottom. Choke = sound a little more refined.

Yes, definitely slightly grittier....but as far as noise is concerned, no difference in noise...and I actually lost one of the 22uf caps as well... :)
