Well, after a month and a half in the repair shop, my amp is alive once again. The repairman said there were two problems.

1) It had parasitic oscillation.
2) There was a short in the speaker cable.

What I've learned is to:

1) Keep standing water away from the amp. j/k
2) Make my own speaker cables.

I hard wired the cut capacitor in order to take the pot out of the signal. This is the first time I've heard the amp with the mod and believe I'll wire it back to the pot. The tone controls don't do as much now.

What did he tell you about the parasitic oscillation? and how did he fix it?

He didn't tell me what caused it, but he showed me what he did.

The ends of the shielded wires from the volume control and inputs were covered in super glue and grounded to pin one of the tube sockets.

Superglue? Could it be silicon? Can you take a pic?
Were the wires re-routed or anything else besides that?

I'll take a pic. It will need to be tomorrow (friday). I was skeptical as well. It had a thick build up.

I know a culprit to track down regarding the tone controls. This morning while I was playing, I had another jolt of voltage and the low end kicked in, which perplexed me. A few minutes later, I heard crackling, and it cut out.

My guess is that a wire on the underside of the board got loose and touched the chassis.

I have also seen a wire get inadvertantly pinched between the board stand-off and short to ground as well.

Funny the tech didn't notice this.

We've been having pretty steady rain, so I haven't been able to get the chassis out in the sunlight to photograph. I had it out of the cab today to look over and completely forgot before putting it back in.

After giving each wire a jiggle, nothing seemed loose, but two prongs of the bass pot did seem very close. The middle prong and the side prong that does NOT connect to the treble pot. I resoldered the middle prong's wire to give it a bit more separation and replaced the wire that coupled to the treble because some of the shield had exposed the wire.

And two fists in the air, all's as it should be! I'll get that chassis pic as well as record some clips sometime hopefully within the week.

With that cut capacitor simply hard-wired in, MAN does this thing have low end to shake the room!

I'm also curious about this"superglue" fix, haven't heard of anyone doing that before. I'd have to agree with the silicon, desoldering would get a little trickier.

I'd leave that puppy out of the box until you're happy with it.

huh! I was just curious to see if the silicon helps. Wasn't going to do it. When I'm happy I'll know it (and it might just be from the box) Wait! Never had a box.
