Small, single ended tube amps - Champ, Supro, etc. What have you tried? Which had the best tone?

I haven't really tried too many practice amps.... I used to have a Crate (unsure of model) but I rarely used it - I got rid of it long time ago. But then I stumbled into a 1954 narrow panel Champ (yes I know the narrow panel didn't come out until 1955 but this one dates to November 1954) and after a couple new tubes and caps and a BBQ speaker, it sounds great and I love it! Such a great sounding amp! Crank it about 1/2 volume and play my '56 reissue custom shop Strat and it sounds amazing.... nice and warm with the right amount of breakup. Everyone should have a Champ! :D

My first build is a 5F2-A with a 10" speaker in a nice finger-joined pine cab. It's wonderfully touch sensitive and goes from sweet & clean at low volume to a nice Tweedy distortion (big surprise there, eh?).

I've finally got almost all of the parts for phase 1 of the tweaks:
add a choke before the plate supply
increase power rail filtering
audio taper volume pot
try screen grid resistors to see if I like the effect

Long-term, I'd like to be able to switch between this Tweed Princeton circuit and a Blackface Champ (maybe even Vibro Champ) in the same chassis/box. With that flexibility and a dirt pedal or two, you could practice anything short of thrash-metal IMHO.

5F2-A is a Princeton which is quite similar circuit to the Champ. Have you ever compared the two? Preference? The 10" speaker would throw a few more decibels your way.

I'm sorry to post this here, but I don't see an admin or general forum. I pm'ed bibleboy3 to discuss his sale items and the message is sitting in my outbox. Will it stay there until bibleboy3 logs in or did I do something wrong?

Again sorry to post here! :?

NP. should show up in his regular email basket. You can check the membership list to see if his email is listed. Only registered members can view this list BTW!

In retrospect, my favourite practise amp was a Mullard 3-3 that my friend Joe built for me.
Based on the Mullard hifi amp, with EZ80/EF86 and EL84 valves, the sound was special, with a lovely warm chime, getting a perfect Vox like distortion at high levels.
The great thing was, it made a good platform for my pedal board, and all kinds of drive pedals sounded excellent through it.
The only problem was that Joe used the Mullard layout, which was not great for guitar use. I may build another one one day, but use a better layout.

Another great practise amp, which I'm currently building, is the 18W Lite with a 12AU7 output valve. Truly awesome Stack in a box sound.

Coco,
I agree with martinw. I have the Mullard "Tube Circuits for Audio Amplifiers".
Very inexpensive book. The 3, 7, and 10 watt amps are worth the price of admission.. These amps weren't designed for guitars, but, they can be transformed into some excellent guitar amps. Martinw proved that.
If you want me to scan something, just ask :D

Oooh, one of each would be better than nice. Looking for a simple SE amp I think.

Here's a couple of pics of my Mullard 3-3 as was. Sorry for the quality.
Note that it had 2 chassis with a seperate preamp, Hi Fi style. Also that at some point I removed the tone control!
You can see how compact it was.

Coco, I'll scan you the schemo and BOM for each, k.

Hey Martin,
Maybe I'm wrong, but I swear you changed the cab. No matter, looks great. :D

Changed the cab? From when to when? :?

I ended up putting an (inferior) P1 in that cab. I made the mistake of trying to change the 3-3 by increasing the gain but when I did it became prone to squeals.
My next one will be in a bigger chassis, and have a standard guitar-amp layout.
Definitely worth building.
