Has anyone tried to reduce the power output by using the 12AU7 as Output tube? How did you do it? How did it sound?

Did you try other tubes as well?

For my next project I might try useing a 6sn7 tube for a push/pull power amp and a mate it to a HG 100 preamp. See links below for schematic of power amp and discussion on the HG 100 preamp. Just looking for a good high gain marshall sound that will sound good at low volumes.

I'm going to guess this is a dumb question. Why not just put a 12AU7 in one of your 18 watt's

Following on from my post in the Practise Amp thread, just wanted to say that in my experince of 2 builds, using a 12AU7 as the output stage of an 18W lite works really well. It's a great sounding amp.

I think if you wanted to build a push/pull amp with anything less than EL84 you will need different PT and OT than the ones you sell.

I think alot of the people who build their own amps find out that even a el84 amp is way to loud for home use. Master volumes and atteunators will work but they suck alot of tone out of the amp when they are used.

That is why I am going to give the 6SN7 tube a chance in a push/pull power amp mated to a hot rodded marshall preamp. I am strictly a at home player who wants to have good tone at low volume levels.I think you would even be suprised by the volume this type of amp produces.

I think there would be a high demand for this type of amp.Market is not saturated like the 18watt's are.

would it be impossible to do power tube switching like in the V6, but using the el84s and 12AU7s?

Pretty much lost cause as they require a much different output transformer impedance. I think you could use the 6AQ5 instead of 6BQ5 / EL84 for a minor drop in power.

Edit - No you cant - wrong pin-out.

However, if you used a really small OT like some designs I've seen, you could switch both tubes and OT.

Isn't the 6AQ5 a seven pin tube? You can't just plug-n-play can you?
