:D Thanks for the kind words Jim. I appreciate it. Glad that all my blabbering is useful.

Spare time? Retirement? Both of those sound great... but alas, neither will ever happen!!! But who am I kidding - I love my job so much, why would I ever want to retire!!!!

Now of course, his hearing is damaged, and IIRC he can no longer hear high frequencies. Such a pity for someone who used to be known for chasing the ultimate guitar tones. I'm sure that if Hendrix was still alive today, his ears would be pretty well shot too - if not his brain.

OK, so before someone accuses me of being the high-wattage deaf guy, I'd like you all to know that I am NEVER in the room with the amp cranked without earplugs! I've gotten quite used to dialing in tones with the plugs in, and then double-checking in the control room at reasonable levels... :)

Now, my brain, that's another story - I think the vibration from all those loud amps is causing my brain to rattle a bit...

On a serious note, it's fantastic to have you around Phil. Your insight (and input into the Triwatt!!) are greatly appreciated. :D

If it's not too much hazzle or expensive, maybe a 230V tap for the PT could be added? Of course the 240V could be used. Not sure how important the exact voltages are in the triwatt.
My sIIIv6 runs fine with a lower than spec 320V on the tubes.
Just a thought. The only country in europe with 240V is the uk. Everybody else use 220-230V.

Thanks. Good point to keep in mind.
So would there be more 220 or 230 V countries?

Can't say for sure without actual measurements. The EU standard is 230V (-6%, +10%) or 216.2 - 253V. Not very specific is it. But 240V would be high unless your in the UK.

Here's the wiki link with all voltages.

I actually lived in the UK for a few years, where they know what *real* voltage is! To be honest I couldn't imagine making a British-style amp without an option for 230/240V operation. :)

Working on the chassis iron layout with the headphones.

Image

Turns out both transformers , on-axis 4" separation or greater is quietest. If I moved the PT off axis, I got hum in the headphones.

Good thing the OT is 6" away in the prototype layout. Time to punch up the chassis.

We still need some parts but getting closer. Mocked up the panel to see what that would look like. What do you think of the panel design?

Fack that looks awesome! I want one!!!

Love the front panel.

How do you decide where the x-formers go with headphones btw?

I like the front panel :P

First thing that struck me was the layout of the three inputs on one end and the power, standby and light on the other really reinforces the Triwatt name / theme (if that makes any sense to anybody  )

How are the bright vol, normal vol, overdrive and master vol interactive?

From AX84 FAQ

What is the headphone trick?

This is the best way to find the quietest place to put a reverb, output, driver, or any other signal transformer to get the least hum. CAUTION: THIS INVOLVES WORKING ON THE AMP WITH WALL VOLTAGE PRESENT. WALL VOLTAGE CAN BE FATAL.
First set up the power transformer. If it's not installed yet, all the better, but if it is, this will still help. If the PT is not installed, wire up the primaries to a power cord, but do not wire up any secondaries-- tape the ends of the secondaries. If the PT is installed, fine, just make sure there is no circuit on any of the secondary leads (pull all tubes, and disconnect leads and tape them as necessary).

Now set up the signal transformer (output, reverb, whatever). Hook one set of OT secondaries (your choice, but I usually go from ground to the highest impedance tap, don't worry about impedance matching here!) to a set of headphones. Tape the primary leads.

Put the headphones on, plug in the power cord, and start moving the signal transformer around. Try it all over the chassis, and also rotate it. While you might expect the least hum with the transformers as far from each other as possible and at right angles (and that may be the case for you), it might come at an odd angle and/or position. Sometimes the least hum occurs when the transformers are side by side. When you find the quietest spot, use a permanent marker to mark where the mounting holes should be.

If you have more than one signal transformer, repeat this for each one. When you're finished, unplug the PT. That's it!
