Too thin. You want at least 3/8", but 1/2" would be best.

I like 3/8". For the Tramp that would be more than fine.

Great looking cabinet Dave.

I envy your woodworking skills. My unfinished cabinet comes from Trinity Amps.

I plan to use shellac like you. Could you tell me what make of shellac you used and is it clear or amber?

I see you have applied two coats. How many do you plan to apply?

I used dewaxed super blonde shellac flakes in a 2 pound cut. I only put two coats of shellac on in total. I am in the process of applying Minwax Wipe-On Poly in Clear Satin now. Three coats of poly have been applied now, will do a few more, will post a pic as soon as I am finished with the poly.

Cabinet with 5 coats of satin wipe-on poly. Only thing left is to get feet and a handle for it. Will do the speaker baffle once I decide on what speaker I am going to use.

Real nice finish.

I like being able to see the beauty of natural wood through the finish. Hope mine will turn out looking as good as yours.

Applied two coats of amber shellac to my cabinet today.

The result is similar to yours, only a little darker. I think two coats are enough.

You need to put the pictures somewhere on the web - we can't see stuff in your email.

Try setting up a free account at photobucket.com, that's where I put my pictures.

You can post them here. Just go to the bottom of your post and you will see:

"If you wish to attach one or more files enter the details below." Click "Browse", find the file, then click "Add the file"

That's all there is to it!

Looks good. :) What do you plan to put on over the shellac?

Cool colour.
What grill cloth are you pairing it with?

I will receive shortly a piece of Fender Aged Blue White Silver Grill Cloth. This is what I plan to use for the moment although I must say I hesitated before buying it on eBay. I was tempted for a while by the Aged Blue White cloth and also by the Fender Beige cloth. Do you have suggestions?

I already have the Black Grill Cloth that comes with the Tramp kit but I don't think I will use it.

As for the finish, I would like to leave the cabinet as is without a clear coat on the shellac. Pockmarks and scratches would only add character to it I figure and, anyway, a new shellac coat is easy to apply.

On the other hand, a friend has pointed out to me that it would be better to put a varnish on it because, in his opinion, shellac is rather fragile. Dave, who started this thread has opted to put a protecting coat on his cabinet so it seems like a good thing to do.

Thanks for your interest. This is a first time guitar amp build for me (only have build two Dynaco products ages ago) and I am pretty excited by this project. I also find it interesting to get info and share ideas on this forum.

Dave and Gotie,

Those are both two very fine examples of great looking craftsmanship. I like both of the natural finishes, but i usually use Bullseye Amber for this kind of thing to bring out the woods grain.

Since these are natural cabinets, in my opinion a grille cloth with more "Earthy" colors might look better like the Fender BrownFace grilles, Oxblood or Wheat. Or they would both would look cool (again...my opinion) with woven Cane, (wicker) grilles.

+1 on the oxblood grille cloth. Love the vintage vibe with that stuff. Stephen build a flame maple Deluxe cab for me using that & it looked fantastic. Damn nice on my blonde Deluxe Reverb cab too...

Yes and no to the fragile part. Put alchol on it and it will soften and leave rings or other marks. Clean it well and re apply shellac and it will become part of the original and can be sanded without leaving witness marks.
It is best for your application to use wipe on poly in either satin, gloss or a mix of the two. I put 25% satin in the gloss, hides the fingerprints and is a nice semi gloss.
Beer bottles and drink glasses have no effect on it. :)
