Aside from reliability concerns, it sounds like the Sozo's maybe take a bit too much top/brilliance off of Matchless designs. Do Orange Drops make them too harsh?

I do not recommend using SOZOs on the Lightning, and I do recommend Mallory 150s. If you look inside a real lightning, you'll see what I mean!

The SOZOs sucked too much tone out.

daz,

I like Sozos for a classic Marshall tone. They also help tame an overly bright amp (like a Marshall or Vox). But they aren't perfect for every situation. In my channel switching amp I use Orange Drops for the Clean channel to get a more Fendery vibe. I use Sozos on the Dirty channel because they emphasize that Marshall honk we all love.

I have also used Mallories and BBQ's Mallory clones and they work well too, but are brighter. But that's fine too, if that's what you want.

And yes, Sozos take 10-20 hours to break in and sound a lot smoother and less grainy afterward.

Since the Mallories or Sozos needed for coupling in an amp are about $20 for either, I think it is a good idea to experiment with both and use what you like.

In one build I've got the Webers, Mallories and Sozos and the amp sounds great, so there's no rule you can't mix and match either!

thanks for the reply. Sozo mentions a 100 hour breakin!!
In my spitfire I replaced the 0.022uf caps before the master and the 0.0022uf to volume with sozos and found initial impressions that the volume cranked the overdrive tighter and definitely brightness tamed overall. But I'll save any criticisms til they have done their 100hour break in. It sounds like these caps need proper break in period.

We have decided to include Sozos on our 18 watt amps and kits.

That's how they are all being built & kitted now. There is a nice smoothmess to the sound, very subtle. We had two identical v6 amps to compare and there was just a little different sound on the Sozo coupled amp versus the Mallory. While they both sounded great, there was a smooth, maybe more complex tone to the Sozos.

Well.... I put a sozo into my Fender tele. Sounds about the same right now. Don't know if it'll warm up after use. We'll see. Hey' if you can put them in amps, why not.....
